Overview
In the summer of 2022, I joined Duo Security’s user-authentication team as a product design intern. Or as they would emphasize as THE product design intern. You see, I worked with a really passionate and motivating team of designers, researchers, and data scientists.

Can't contain the minds of the user-auth team!
They were an amazing bunch who taught me so much as I designed a new feature for the Universal Prompt, Duo’s newest web-based authentication interface. Unfortunately, I am unable to share the project details with you until it is released to the public next year. Until then, I am more than happy to chat with you about my experience.
Project Timeline
I started by first reviewing the beta designs and meeting with the people who were involved to better understand the scope and goals of the project. I then completed an audit, outlined a user journey, and brainstormed multiple sketches and low-fi prototypes. I worked closely with my research partner, Kieran Hatton, to draft, observe, and analyze 2 rounds of usability tests and a round of A/B testing. I designed 3 iterations incorporating the feedback and insights.

I also worked closely with my wonderful manager, Sierre Wolfkostin; research advisor, Kaush Ganesh; and data and metrics advisor, Scott Henry. I held bi-weekly meetings with my team to discuss project progress, gather feedback, and brainstorm ideas with design jams. Overall, this project would not have been made possible if weren’t for everyone who has supported me and helped me along the way.

Only cool people here :)
Takeaways
1. Define project goals early to measure design success and progress.
2. Onboard and touch base with relevant members such as data scientists and engineers early and often to understand project requirements and technical feasibility.
3. Develop a project timeline with sufficient buffer time.
4. Expect to spend a lot of time dedicated to revising designs to meet accessibility standards.
5. Design jams are a great way to incorporate lots of ideas from others to brainstorm great solutions.
6. Run a pilot test or with the internal team before conducting User testing.
7. It’s ok to feel behind at the beginning, just know that you can always reach out to your manager and team for help.
8. Take advantage of growth and learning opportunities by shadowing how other teams do their work, attending workshops, and experimenting more.
